In Search of Bucolic

Story By Dale Irvin
Door County Wisconsin is dotted with charming B&Bs like this one.
So by now if you haven’t planned a getaway for the Fourth, your best bet is probably a Staycation…and of course, there are plenty of swell things to do right down the road.

But now it’s time to plan ahead for the next holiday weekend…Labor Day.

Freshly back from a trip home to see the family in the Midwest, I’ve once again been reminded of just what the term “bucolic” is meant to describe—after long drives through rolling green hills and a family reunion in a postcard perfect farming community where the attendees at our family affair outnumbered the folks we saw about town.

And so I’m inspired by those drives…and a good airfare…to recommend one of the prettiest Midwestern states for a Labor Day getaway. AirTran has just expanded its service into Milwaukee with discounted fares starting at $92 each way before taxes. I found sale fares still available on dates that bracketed the Labor Day weekend. Other carriers have fares for just a few dollars more.

From there it’s a 150-mile drive to “the New England of the Midwest.” Door County is a long narrow peninsula that juts out into Lake Michigan, its spectacular shoreline dotted with villages that will make you think you’re in Vermont. Summers are filled with Shakespeare performances, art openings, fish boils and lots of long strolls along uncrowded beaches. Find a listing of B&Bs and many more activities than you’ll have time to enjoy at www.doorcounty.com.
