I make work for a variety of reasons,” says Lafayette artist Francis X. Pavy, “some of which I’m not sure I completely understand. I’m compelled to make things. I make some work simply because I imagined it and wanted to see it materialize. Some work I make to relive and tell stories.” I Smell Rain is one in a series of block monoprints on paper and cloth.
“My work stems from the narrative sto-rytelling tradition,” explains Pavy. “Common subjects for me are the folklife and folklore of the local people juxtaposed against the fabric of every-day American life. I am particularly interested in music, musicians and the musical traditions of Louisiana.” In Louisiana, Pavy is represented by Arthur Roger Gallery in New Orleans.
